Old Rutlishians 7 v 12 OH

The day had finally came for captain Clesh and his merry men to make the short trips to the depths of Mordor (Morden) to take on the “mighty” old RUTLISHIANS RFC. A game anticipated to go down in history as the defining game of the season.

The boys turned up with an air of tension, but more calming words have never been uttered by a certain Henry Trimmer “blue heads lads”

Alas, the game kicked off in style. Kick off from Jonny, dropping the ball into what can only described as wet concrete and gale force winds to set us off. Immediately Harry makes a flying tackle on one of their big boys and we were under way. Within 5 minutes of defence, again, Clesh came up trumps with a turnover that followed by a deafening silence from the Ruts fan base.

Strong carrying from the boys ensued and a strong resemblance of our structure. We looked class. Le juice goosey uses his outside forwards and bait and sends what I thought was 90% of their team for 6 and slipped through the gap. Strong support from Clesh presented juice with his bread and butter. Clesh under the posts 7-0. These boys can play!

The majority of the 1st half saw us pinned horribly into our 22m, Ruts used the wind well but we held the door (#hodor?). The 2nd half finished at 7-0 OH.

The 2nd half ensued, again the boys started strong. This is somewhat of a blur as it was mainly scrappy back and forth rugby. Again the boys defence came up trumps. We came close to conceding a few times, many last ditch tackles, favourable penalties and solid graft worked well.

Finally, the boys made it to Ruts’ try line, many hearts, many wings, many greys and a hell of a hardline from will Thomas got the Ruts lads so shaken that their prop who looked like Claire balding decided to take the blanket yellow for the team. That yellow was the deciding factor, combined with quick thinking, sent disco Dave over the line for a quick tap rumble.

Fatally, I decided that their little man who came on was doing way too much and tried to knock his head off. Ref and Ruts’ fans were not happy. Handbags and a yellow card later, we were down to 14 men.

Ruts took advantage, their man back on, and put us on our line. After a period of sustained pressure, they got on the scoreboard… finally (most tries scored this season my arse). The elation must’ve got to their heads, and they decided to shove Juicey… no amount of free port in the changing room can make up for a lack of class on the pitch.

Back to 15 men, the boys knuckled down for the final 15. Scrappy, tense, and anxious rugby put the game into the business end of the match. In the dying embers of the game, Clesh covers and shots their winger into touch. He’ll of a tackle, decided to have a little nap ? on him and waste even more time. Again, the handbags followed.

Finally, ruts had a scrum had after 80 mins of hands you couldn’t really knock, the pressure got to them and they fumbled it. Final whistle 12-7 OH (again handbags, we ruined their win streak I reckon)

Gonna get cited,
Wrighty
