OH 7 - Law Soc 5 at half time Full time after real grit and determination saw OH triumph 31-10

Match Report:
Saturday 23rd September 2023

OH welcomed old rivals Law Society to the sun-soaked pastures of Ruxley Lane.

Under the watchful eye of new coach and captain, Adam Gealer and Harry Clesham respectively, the warmup was strong and disciplined. The game started as a tight arm wrestle for 10 mins with neither team breaking the deadlock.

OH showing more promise through running rugby, whilst Law Society showing scrum dominance against a new OH front row.

Some kick tennis ended when Dan Blackwell kicked to space in their 22 and recovered his own ball. He passed inside and found a supporting Charlie Spilsbury who sidestepped and scored under the posts. 7-0 OH.

Law Society maintained pressure with the hill and wind in their favour. They amassed a few penalties which kept OH pinned back, and eventually scored on the 30 min mark. Try unconverted. 7-5 to OH.

OH showed good grit and physicality in defence, as Law Soc continued to their advances through scrum dominance and kick to touch for the remaining 10 mins. They got close many times but weren’t successful in another score. 7-5 at half time.

Tactical genius of Adam & Harry saw 3 changes made at half time, making use of the rolling sub rule. As Ollie Buck moved into fullback, his first touch saw him take a high ball and run at the Law Soc defensive line chase. He found a gap and offloaded to Tom Woodruff who broke the line, and passed to [cant remember - Matt Richardson maybe??] to score near the posts. 14-5 to OH.

With the wind and downhill in favour, OH’s back line knew it was their time to make a difference, and Ollie Mann put in a cross-field kick to Sam McCafferty who caught it on the left wing and ran to score almost-untouched. His haste to score under the posts meant ball placement was frenzied, and he injured himself in the act of scoring. Bellend. 21-5 to OH.

OH’s kicking game remained strong and was backed up by a reliable line out led by Dave Duncan. A Law Soc infringement near their 5m line allowed Dave to take a quick tap and snipe over their line. Unconverted try meant 26-5.

Penultimately, I think Luke Wright scored but I don’t remember the details. Unconverted too. 31-5.

Finally Law Soc scored with a couple mins to go but who cares at this point, we’ve all got beers on our mind and the clubhouse are serving burgers. 31-10.

MOTM - Dave Duncan
DOTD - Jamie Curtis
