OH 1st XV win against Old Wellingtonians in pre-season friendly

With the OH 2nd XV ensuring Old Wellies have 15 to start the game after only 13 of their boys played on Saturday, the main event kicked off just after 2pm and it wasn't long before the action heated up more than 24-degree celsius conditions the chaps were treated to.

Thankfully a gentlemen's agreement to avoid any real scrumming meant this was a fast flowing fixture with some big metres gained by both team's backs.

George Fairlie back from his last year at Uni slotted into the nine jersey superbly as did new back line players Will Bates, Matt McPhilipps and Ollie 'James' Buck.

Sam Hyne also caused headaches from the full back shirt and the almost all-Aussie back row with Matt, Tim and Jake H were providing some big lines and hard hits around the park.

I recall OH scoring at least 1-2 tries in the first third and there definitely was an opportunity completely spooned by a certain member of the Aussie contingent. He'll remain nameless but I heard his 'shoey' caused quite a stir. I think Will and Fred scored one in the first half each and Elliot slotted one of the kicks. 12-0 after the first third to the OH.

Old Wellies managed to score a delicious try on the back of their 10 Speedo - good friend of the OH - playing a decent shift in trying conditions and setting up one of their forwards, who managed to drop the ball over the line and still get awarded the try. A masterstroke if you could ever pull it off and he did.

The OH went down and scored another try taking a 19-7 lead into the final third. I believe it was Will or Matt. They're both very fast and I was probably on the floor taking a well-earned rest when it was scored.

Some injuries led to a few position swaps and all of sudden Dom Higgins was also playing for Wellies and calling out Aussie Tim, who really didn't need it with 3 hours kip in him, for some special treatment.

A superb set piece play off the line out just outside our 22 - well done all for Wednesday night's training because that's where this one started - set up without doubt the best-executed try we have scored in a long, long time. Pretty sure Will or Matt scored this one too.

Massive performances must be said to all the new boys in Ollie, Will B, Owain D and Matt M. These chaps were out and out stars in the match and terrific to see the new breed coming through.

Fred, Aussie Matt, Aussie Tim (despite his dildo hands), Felix, Aussie Max, Jake H, Yash (when he came on) and Jevs got through a mountain of work in the forwards and all will be better for the run. Well, except Yash and Jake who both picked up a niggle, but played superbly.

Owain was a revelation in the hooker shirt and had a terrific game with ball in hand. Rob Petherick wound back the clock to make some big hits and carries, and came away body in tact too which everyone is now punching the air about ahead of round 1! Will Slatton also deserves a mention for his cameo for Wellies - as he made the most metres for them with ball in hand despite only playing 10mins.

All in all, this was a terrific hit-out ahead of some big fixtures next week.

MOTM - Owain Davies
DOTD - Tim Bradley
Think we won 24-7
