OHRFC vs. OLD CRANLEIGHANS 7 - 22

Match Report - 13th Sept, 2XV v Old CranleighansAfter the usual of unavailability for early September fixtures (were there really 60 weddings going on last weekend?), a decidedly youthful OH 2s side turned up at Fortress Ruxley Lane on Saturday full of excitement at the prospect of the new season and the appearance of a number of new faces. The weather was set fair and the pitch in majestic condition and everyone was looking forward to a great run around against our old foes the Old Cranleighans who had turned up with a very greedy 21 players and kindly agreed to give us an additional player (false confidence?) to even things out given we were reduced to 14 following a withdrawal overnight due to illness (get well soon Milesy).

The game started well for the OHs, with everyone quickly getting stuck into a reasonably feisty battle. From the start it was clear that the OCs were decidedly more familiar with each other (I swear they even knew each others names...) as their off loading and quick rucking game gave them the lion's share of possession. But the OHs fought valiantly, tackling anything that moved and winning their own fair share of possession and looking threatening when they got the ball into the hands of their speedsters out wide. Taking advantage of an OC handling error well behind the gain line, new boys George and Si combined well to hack through, with Si grabbing the bouncing ball and diving over, and Lunch adding the conversion to give the OHs a 7-0 lead. Both sides had chances to score through the rest of the half, particularly the OHs on the back of the famous Walsh bomb which our very quick backs were able to regularly get under and cause blind panic amongst the OCs backs. However, strong defence generally won over attacking endeavour and the the OHs went into half time leading and happy with a good result given early season cobwebs against a well drilled OCs who had obviously been training hard over the summer.

The second half continued in much the same vein as the first, with both sides frantically running the ball at a 100 miles an hour and the tackles still going in hard, but as the OHs lack of fitness began to tell the OCs were starting to get on top and inevitably their hold on possession eventually told as they scored a couple of tries mid way through the half as the OCs kept off loading in the tackle and the OHs simply ran out of defenders. Fortified by the return of new boy Richard after a nasty blow to the head, the OHs came back strong but sadly couldn't find the break through that might have snatched the game and the OCs managed to sneak a couple of tries at the death as our boys simply ran out of steam. So a 22-7 loss, but by no means disappointing against a side who admitted afterwards they had expected to trounce us having brought along six 1st team regulars from last season who were unbeaten in the same league as our 1s.

All 15 OHs (including the OCs Robin who put in a valiant performance, happily stamping all over 'his' team all game long!) should feel very proud of their efforts and as the weddings and holidays come to an end and those 60 blokes who couldn't make it out this weekend become available, we can look forward to what should be a very successful and enjoyable season. It is tough to pick a man of the match when no one could be faulted for their effort but I thought first timer Will had a very strong game on the flank, tackling anything that moved and getting his hands on the ball regularly.

OHRFC vs. TEDDINGTON 5 - 12

Match Report - 20th Sept 08, OHRFC v TeddingtonI am a traditionalist. For me you can keep your E.LVs and the ‘number on your back’ should always bear a direct correlation to your commitment to physical contact. But I have to accept that the modern game has brought us into a new world, one of dynamism, pace and opportunity. These were the thoughts going through my mind deep into injury time on Saturday as the Old Haileyburian prop made a brilliant arching run through the opposition’s defence that spoke to the very modernity of our wonderful game – these thoughts were still in my mind as he shinned the ball over the dead ball line and with it our hopes of salvaging a point. Plus ca change – props should not kick! Yet this does not tell the full story – a story soaked in the blood and sweat of defensive defiance, and sprinkled with some superb try-scoring opportunism.

If preparation is an indication of performance – Teddington should be vying for the Heineken Cup come May. As the OH’s unfurled themselves form a collection of small two door cars, and counted up to 15 (ish), Teddington were halfway through a 2 hour warm up that involved more coaches and cones than the M1 on a Sunday afternoon. Far be it from me in these economically challenging times to pass comment on the ‘value for money’ of such a lavish use of resources …but it proved a stark contrast to the strange disappearance of our own Lehman Brothers No.8 – lets hope there is no contagion! The match itself followed a similar pattern. Teddington – all drill and automation – OH all determination and ‘spontaneity’ (seasoned observers will recognize this as a charitable way of saying disorganized; ‘off the cuff’ also works in this space.) Yet for all the moves and painfully transparent colour-coded calls the ‘The Antlers’ could muster, they had no way through a solid and aggressive OH defence. It was indeed the OH’s who scored first. Deciding that it would be good to stop tackling for at least five minutes on your day off from work, OH moved the ball down the right, Andy “ah look, I ve spent too long in Oz” Blacoe, floated a delightful pass, and Sully powered down the right wing proving years of Physics theorem correct - a heavy weight rolling down hill will pick up unstoppable force! 5 – 0 - Hartley dragging a good conversion narrowly wide.

Half-time and the talk was of rucking in units and breaking up their structure - whilst us older heads just hoped that their fly-half would just keep kicking the ball away for another 40 minutes. And indeed things started well. Teddington huffed-and-puffed – OH tackled their hearts out and weathered the storm. Indeed the next scoring chance was ours – a penalty from distance and a chance to extend the lead. Hartley – as in life – agonizingly short. But “the antlers” came again. The fly half ran and did not kick. The big pack hit the side of the rucks. And just when it seemed all was ok – a loose kick from Teddington, confusion at the back and a soft 5 pointer. Six minutes left – and all square – OH exhausted from tackling their hearts out –Teddington on a roll down the hill, and looking for victory. Drop goals were charged down (Blacoe jnr this time) but the damn finally burst. Successive phases, a long miss out pass, a stretched defence, and a winning score. 5-12 – with only the in-vain efforts of a kicking prop-forward as a lifeline… Special mentions to Tom for stepping up at prop, Hodgey and Big Ben in the second row and the work-rate of the entire back row throughout. I reckon about 75 minutes of non-step defence is a pretty tough ask – and we should all be incredibly proud of our efforts…and if you are feeling a bit sore this morning console yourself with the thought that Gordon Brown is going to have a much worse week than you.

CRANLEIGH vs. OHRFC 3 - 37

Match report - Cranleigh v OHRFC 4th Oct 2008

Napoleon once said that "over-preparation is the foe of inspiration". Whilst this philosophy didn't particularly work out for him as he got smashed 5km south of Waterloo, thankfully on Saturday a similar mindset served the Old Haileyburians rather better as they met a Cranleigh side 12km east of Guildford.

With less than ten minutes to go before the scheduled 3pm kick-off, just under half an OHs side stood about waiting for Unter's remaining loyal footsoldiers to arrive. Without either of the practice balls that the club had heavily invested in pre-season they stood in awe of a previously unbeaten Cranleigh team running through their drills, hitting a widely impressive selection of tackle bags and modern rugby training paraphernalia. Thankfully the Cranleigh side kindly agreed to a 15 minute delay in proceedings (a good reflection of the amateur spirit of Surrey 2, more of which below) which allowed the remaining members of the team to arrive, skipper and all.

A couple of lineouts and a backs move later and Edwards kicked us off and almost immediately a complete lack of preparation was paying dividends as a succession of inspired Haileyburians threw themselves towards the Cranleigh line. 10 minutes of pressure eventually resulted in a Cranleigh infringement and DD converted a penalty from an acute angle. With the forwards on top both in the scrum and the loose from the start and Edwards and Major keeping us in Cranleigh territory we continued to play on the front foot. Some quick phase ball led to Hartley being sent clear on the left wing and after some good cover defence from the Cranleigh full-back, Edwards was on hand to barrel over from 5 metres out, carrying three opposition players with him and using every one of the extra pounds he's brought to his game this season. Unfortunately Edwards was unable to convert.

After Cranleigh put three points on the board, the OHs quickly crossed the line again in the same corner. This time Fergus, who had a fantastic debut all around the park, benefiting from some good work at the breakdown from Unters, showed some unexpected gas to outpace the opposition cover. Again the team were disappointed when Edwards failed to convert. The remainder of the first half was evenly balanced with both sides showing some strong defence. Boothy and Goose made some promising breaks and Tommo and Babyeater continued to dominate the set-piece. The only other score was another penalty for DD from distance after the opposition had, once again, demonstrated their eagerness to pull Cooper out of the sky at the lineout.

Not to be phased by his repeated freefalls, shortly after half-time Cooper was seen screaming away from a breakdown on his own. Moments later it was spotted that he also had the ball - this was good news. Hanging onto his 10 metre start for dear life Coops made it all the way to the tryline and, after Edwards finally got a kick over, OHs found themselves in a very satisfying 23-3 lead. Coincidentally this was the point in the game when the Cranleigh Villagers became vividly dissatisfied, with the scoreline, the ref, the game of rugby, their coach and pretty much anything else going. The mature response from their sibling forwards was particularly impressive.

Equally impressive was the Cranleigh captain's dedication to his team's league progress when in the second half he momentarily confused the amateur and social Surrey leagues to the Guinness Premiership. Wiseman had come on for the irrepressible Larry at half-time and shortly afterwards Nils replaced Boothy who had tweaked a hamstring. Unfortunately this meant that when Hodgey, who had a great game in the row, suffered an injury later in the half, we had no substitutes left. Our request to bring Larry back on was, as the laws permit, declined. I may be doing Cranleigh a disservice as after this they were kindly queuing up to be sinbinned and therefore bring the sides back to 14 a piece - however I fear that this was not out of a gentlemanly desire to assist. I know that in the same circumstances we would permit Cranleigh to bring a player back on and indeed will do if the circumstances arise in the return fixture. That is because ultimately turning out on a Saturday is for the enjoyment of the game at a level where, whilst winning is important, it really should be impossible to take yourself too seriously. As such we shall, at their request, be playing Old Walcoutians this week on Sunday as they could not raise a team on Saturday due to a teammates wedding - win or lose I'm sure it will be a great game played in the right competitive but social spirit we have all come to enjoy.

As it happens it didn't really matter, save that Larry is always keen for another 20 minutes. Our forwards continued to provide a steady stream of good ball and first Nils and then Goose went over for two of the best tries we'll score this season. Nils, who hit a number of razor angles, stepped past three defenders for his try and Goose took a more direct route, via a wee juggle, to hit a line off Nil's shoulder that was far too clever for the Cranleigh defence.

So, after a slow start to the season following the late-summer holiday period and a strengthening of the squad in recent weeks, things are looking sweet. What was most satisfying was returning to the Alma to find that the 2s had stuffed their oppo by even more. More of the same next week.

OHRFC vs. EGHAM HWEGIANS 58 - 10

Match report - OHRFC 2XV v Egham 4th oct 2008

The omens the day before the game were broadly positive and confidence was high. Largely due to the fact that there were 18 players down on the team sheet including some promising looking debutantes. Selection discussion s on Friday were centred on how to get maximum game time for players given such a large turnout. It was a this point that Willis displayed prescient cynicism by saying, “Let’s not worry about it now. Let’s see how many turn up tomorrow.” What wisdom.

As it turned out we were rapidly down to 15 players and an ill Freddie who rather than face more shopping at John Lewis offered up his body to the cause.

Ruxley Lane was its usual manicured self and there was a vicious diagonal wind pushing down the slope which had older heads worrying about the 2nd half when we would be playing uphill into the teeth of the gale. As it turned out we needn’t have worried too much. Even though we had no recognised front row, our pack was larger and considerably friskier than the opposition. OHs played a strong 1st half of pick and drive, counter rucking and in-your-face cussedness. The result being that each breakdown seemed to leave an injured Hollowegian in its wake.

Through good support running, strong forwards work, quick taps and punching runs from the backs we rattled up a significant first half lead. Fred bagged a brace and your correspondent snaffled a hat-trick from the back-row.

Given our dominance of the first half it was perhaps inevitable that our approach became looser and more expansive. This led to some tries further out with the wingers both scoring, Kinsley getting a hat-trick with some well-timed runs off his wing and George sneaking in at the corner. Not to be outdone by all this fancy stuff, Eamon barrelled under some bodies and over the line for a score.

The loose play did however allow Egham their moments too. Their long-haired scrumhalf ran a full 50 metres evading countless tackles to score a nice try. They scored another (less exciting) one, quick tap- penalty I think.

All in all a very pleasing performance in large parts from OHs, excellent support running, good intensity at the breakdown and good hands helping us accumulate the points. If we can keep that going and cut out the scrappiness that descended in parts of the 2nd half then the season will be a good one.

It was a truly team performance but if I have to single out a man of the match then I’d go for Mike Brown who, in only his 2nd match back from injury, displayed excellent work rate up front and helped secure much of the possession that allowed the rest of us the chuck it around with such abandon.

Lastly, a big well done to the new guys who turned up and impressed, see you all next week.

RACAL DECCA vs. OHRFC 0 - 62

Racal Decca vs OHRFC 2XV

A glorious day for running rugby (if you were being picky you might say it was a little on the warm side for October) and a pitch with a homely, if slightly alpine, feel to it. A perfect opportunity for the champagne runners of the elite 2s to show off a few of the moves they had practiced on the dance floor on Friday night.

Having warmed up by walking the 3.5 miles to the pitch we started by (as is the custom) introducing ourselves, before quickly forgetting what everybody was called and then spending the rest of the match calling each other the wrong name. Unusually, there weren’t any front row boys in the team but the huge excess of flankers and centres seemed to make amends as we quickly scuppered what was (in hindsight) the best chance of Racal Decca winning by forcing them to play uncontested scrums despite having a team with at least 8 props and far and away the heaviest pack in the league. In fact, there were even a few nervous looks in the OH ranks as the teams eyed each other prior to kick off. In the mean time the referee said something about ELVs which no-one understood and showed off about how many people he had sent off the previous week. It was all set up for a tough afternoon and the OH supporters club (its numbers swelled to a record breaking 4) admitted afterwards that they didn’t hold out much chance of an away win when they saw some of the behemoths facing us.

As it happened, Mungo and his shaven headed friends weren’t quite as frightening as they looked and things were going well after ten minutes as the pack, ably led by the ever ferocious Woody, got off to a strong start and got stuck into the opposition and had them trundling towards their own line despite the 3 stone a man advantage. The backs, having got over an early fascination with dinky chips started to make that advantage count and the benefits of youth and pace began to reap rewards. Marshaled excellently by (an initially reluctant but consistently comfortable) Andy and with some powerful running in the centres (in spite of the dubious sense of Rugby fashion that must have given the opposition some false grounds for optimism), the tries began to come. Simple rugby reaped rewards and, despite the fluffing of a few opportunities, powerful bursts to the line from Kingsley, Rob and Dangerous resulted in a healthy 30+ point lead at half time. The difference might have been greater if we hadn’t started to become slightly careless in the offload and if the referee had been a little bit more generous with a flat pass (given as forward) which would have resulted in a rare and frankly spectacular try for… me (actually) after a dazzling display of quick hands and smart off loading by a rampant pack.

Unsurprisingly, no-one wanted to come off at half time although Hulmey gallantly stepped up into the forwards to experience a bit of graft. Kingsley and Dangerous continued to notch up tries (taking their respective tallies to 7 and 6 in the last two games) as our dominant back-line continued to prosper. Nevertheless, the champagne moment must surely be the delicately weighted chip and excellent chase down the right hand touch-line that almost led to a try before the coup de gras was administered from the subsequent scrum by the rampaging man of the match at No.8, Hugh. In days gone by, injuries picked up by Finchy (sporting a beard that fits in well with his new image of hard running prop) and Will, might have signaled disaster, but this time fresh legs were available. Andy started to slot conversions from the touch line, Hulmey told his opposite number that he was an “angry little man” and Woody kindly let a late tackler know what the score was as he set up the final try of the game for Dangerous (who promptly slotted a drop goal just to add salt to the wound).

The final thought of this report however must be reserved for our esteemed 1st XV captain’s not so little brother, who having singled handedly recruited half the team and after 80 minutes of hard yardage and rummaging around in the bottom of rucks was taken aside by his lovely girlfriend and told that he spent too much time lying down. Harsh.

OHRFC vs. OLD WALCOUNTIANS 11 - 23

Match report: OHRFC vs.Old Walcountians

There’s nothing like turning up to Fortress Ruxley lane on a warm autumnal day in expectation of a free flowing game of rugby on a hard fast surface. Also nothing better than being an Allakadoo supping on a cool beer either. Admittedly, I was slightly distraught at seeing a team kitted out in nylon football jerseys (OH’s!) trying and succeding in matching the lack of Fashion sense of the oppo. Jesus H Christ, we’ll be considering training and a coach next.

However, there’s nothing worse than turning up and being out numbered by OW’s supporters either, especially when they’re mouthy cabbies. So was there much to shout about during the match?

OH’s put in a gutsy first half performance against a well organised OW’s team, both sides intent on running the ball as much as possible. Each team scored a fine try apiece in a closely fought first half DD’s back flick to Major had me choking on my Pork Pie! A player with Scottish genes showing a bit of flair. The OW response deserved their supporters cry’s of “get in my son, lovely jubbly’ and all manner of cliched football rubbish. There were ominous sighs as the half drew to a close that OW’s were beginning to make more turnovers of our ball, in rucks and mauls. But there was still much to be optimistic about when the whistle blew, we were still in it and I was hoping we could send the Cabbies home dumbstruck and silent. ( I had an OH in the back of me cab once – gloated the whole way to Heathrow).

OH’s really started to get it together in the second half and with the arrival of new prop Matt to the front row, we started to stuff them in the scrums. Unfortunately, after a ten minute spell of sustained pressure in the OW 22, we only came away with three points after blowing some try scoring opportunities. That was the turning point of the game because with it we allowed the OW’s self belief to remain intact. From then on OH’s began to fall off their tackles and OW’s made many scything breaks, resulting in some very good tries full of great support and handling. We didn’t really deserve the final scoreline and for 75 minutes showed we will compete well against any team, with coaches and training schedules. OW’s deserved their win and were full of running and skill in a free flowing game.

Nice to see Goose out of retirement for the third year running and I thought Major and (this sickens me to say) Unters put in tireless efforts all day. I think our front row isssues may be solved as Fatty Parker has threatened to be back in a few weeks time. Good luck for the season boys, it’ll be our turn next time.

OHRFC v London Media

Saturday 1st November 2008

1stXV vs. London Media It was the New Zealand born British actress, Katherine Mansfield, who once said "I love the rain. I want the feeling of it on my face." Would she have echoed those sentiments when packing down for the 30th scrum on a miserable day at Ruxley Lane? Perhaps not, but not everyone can be a hero. One thing for sure is that the torrential rain on Saturday did not dampen the OH spirit.

In appalling conditions, the 1s produced one of the best performances of the season and notched an emphatic 53-7 victory over London Media. The game was a must win. After a frustrating draw against Law Society, it was time to get the season back on track. With the heavens open and the pitch a mud bath, the game plan was simple: keep the ball in hand, keep things tight and take it to them up front. The pack did not disappoint. The first 10 minutes were played in the Media 22 and saw the Haileybury front five assert an early dominance which that they would not lose all game. The pressure culminated in two scrums won against the head leading to a try and a penalty. Tommo, Fergus, Babyeater: take a bow. The damage we can inflict with a first choice front row is frightening.

At 8-0 there was a period of parity during which the Haileybury back row did well to prevent Media from gaining quick ball at the break down. As their frustration set in, so did their indiscipline and the penalty count was soon out of control. Time and again Media were pinged for killing the ball and not staying on their feet. This gave the ever imperious Donaldson ample opportunity to kick territory. But territory is nothing without an effective set piece and despite the wet, our lineout was ticking with the precision of a Swiss watch. Ed Davis and Unters kept plucking bullets out of the sky allowing the ensuing rampaging mall to strike at the heart of the Media defence. The pack (bossed by Larry at 9) followed up with second and third phase ball allowing the back line to carve openings. With the penalty count hitting double figures and the scrum and line out so dominant, the tone of the match was set and the tries began to reign in. Boothy (2), Hartley and Monkey ran in impressive solo efforts. Fergus (2), Si Thomson and Si Davis all went over to make sure that the pack deservedly had its name in lights on the score board. Fresh on the back of a recent nomination as Young Solicitor of the Year, it now seems likely that 2008 will be remembered as Annus Tommos.

The 53-7 scoreline was just reward for an impressive display combining power, resolve and clinical finishing. With conditions as they were, it was always going to be a day for the pack and so it proved. Special mention must go to the front five who worked tirelessly both at the set piece and up front. DD controlled the game at 10 with seemingly effortless poise and the rest of the back line looked slick. It was also great to see Dougie and Schoey down for their debuts this season. Man of the match goes to Fergus for a superb all round performance. Back in The Alma, news reached us that Mike Brown's proposal of marriage to his long-suffering girlfriend and co-habitee, Victoria, had been accepted. Sunshine on a rainy day indeed.

WOKING vs. OHRFC 0 - 48

Woking vs OHRFC

Woking 0 - 48 OHRFC 2s

It really was a crappy day. The sky at 2.30pm had that uniformly dark grey wet look about it that I like to think is the essence of British climatic expression. It failed to disappoint for as the match went on it got steadily darker, drizzlier and more dismal.

Add to the weather the fact that we were playing (a) under electricity pylons carrying 34,000 happily humming carcinogenic volts and (b) right next the busiest, yet slowest, 8 lane motorway in Europe and you'd be forgiven for asking what on earth we'd given up an exciting day's newspaper reading for.

The answer quite simply was our annual visit to Woking, traditionally a real festival of running rugby and high scoring games which sadly the hosts have never quite bought into.

In fairness to Woking they were applauded last year for turning out an enthusiastic team for what must have been a painful game and this year there were considerable improvements in their line up and I fear we were a little complacent at times. That said, we were the stronger side and, though uncontested at scrum time, our pack did sterling work securing good ball for the backs and the throng of other piggies keen to have a run with pill in hand.

The handling was excellent all game but we will need to sharpen up some of our decision making when facing tougher opposition. Wally is keen to mention that his try was first and set the tone for the game and Woody is also keen to point out that his try effectively killed off any resistance. The other try scorers who have no specific comments on their trys are Andy Roy, Rich Smith, Jonno Watts 2 and Dangerous 2. Fred was convinced he converted 5 of them but sadly the scorecard recorded otherwise, still as Meatloaf didn't say, 4 out of 8 aint bad.

Well done to everyone involved, particularly those playing out of position; they were difficult conditions and it was an excellent result to stop them crossing our line.

My man of the match is a consolation prize for the opposition's lone substitute who waited 80 minutes in his kit patiently running touch in the pouring rain only to find out at the final whistle that he wasn't going to get a game that week.

OHRFC vs. OLD EMANUEL 25 - 15

OHRFC vs. OLD EMMANUELOH's vs Old Emmanuel, 20th Dec 2008 With Christmas in sight, spirits high and a full complement of cars to take people to the ground life was looking rosy for the assembled troops on a sunny Surrey Saturday afternoon (hooray for such marvellous alliteration I hear you say)....

Arriving in good time (i.e. a good 45 mins before kick off) it was no surprise to see the opposition already out on the field of play discussing tactics and doing drills... With not a cone in sight, or trainer, or physio (still astounded that the ref asked if we had one of these??) OH's had all they needed... a pair of balls.... Despite DD mangling the pump they were soon well inflated and the OH's were ready for the off...

Playing up hill but unusually with the wind, the start was as bad as it could have been with a dubious penalty conceded from the kick off in front of the sticks for 'going over the top'. OE's nudged over the penalty and immediately the OH's knew they were in for a game... Having said that, so did the OE's and soon with wave after wave of attack the OH's were not only on terms but squeaking in front of the opposition. With a break up the left flank Larry managed to brush off a few helpless cover tackles to touch down in the corner. DD was pinging over the penalties with relative ease and the OH's were on a roll.

Perhaps some of the best rugby all season was strung together as the backs and forwards went through numerous phases recycling and stretching the opposition. Sustained pressure from the OH's saw the ball eventually worked to Kingers to finish off the good work. It was a good half of rugby and everyone had contributed. Perhaps Sully may have backed himself a little more to go half the pitch having picked up an intercept, but in prep school cricket fashion, what can only be deemed as a 'refusal' resulted in him spilling the ball forward (more on this later) and the opportunity had gone...

Sully's handling skills were instrumental again in the second half resulting in a third try from James Downer Down who capitalised on some extraordinary shovel work orchestrated by Mr Sullivan once more... Whether there is a new ELV legitimising such a cultured approach to knocking the ball on I do not know, but a flurry of repeated hand scoops by Sully bamboozled attackers, defenders and the referee and achieved what not even the most outrageous piece of skill could have conjured in such a crowded midfield - a try under the posts... We can only salute such improvisation oh and the referee for allowing the game to 'flow' until we ended up under their sticks.

Fair play to the OE's - they threw everything back at us and with some slick midfield moves conjured two good tries, albeit one was blatant crossing but they certainly made the OH's sweat for the final 20 mins or so. However, in chasing the game the OH's were able to play behind the boot of DD who himself chipped another penalty in the closing stages to put the game well beyond the opposition.

Other highlights/lowlights of the game were Fergus being sin binned for slapping the opposition second row and Goose for blotting an otherwise commanding performance with a pitifully shanked drop goal which even Cipriani could have scored.

There were commanding performances from everyone who ran out - everyone contributed, even Willis (not technically correct but let’s not spoil things)... The front row in Baby, Wisey and Schoie were heroic in the tight and ever present in the loose, the makeshift second row surged and grunted when required, Whalley especially with some busting runs. The backrow were awesome and between, Si Davies, Ferg, Dougie and Trav really made the game we played possible by being everywhere. Hats off in particular to Dougie, who had an outstanding game.

Larry and DD ran things comfortably all afternoon at halfback; Stuey and Downer bossed the midfield (with the exception of the aforementioned tries, which were probably Willis' fault anyway). Kingers, scooper Sully and Goose had influential games through their running, chasing and tackling throughout the afternoon. Chalmers and Hartley added fresh legs and bite when called upon... Hartley even beat one or two defenders in a powerful run that resulted in... a 22 drop out, but nonetheless he was one of 19 top chaps who turned out and won a cracking game 25-15 on a magical day at Ruxley Lane....

And so back to the Alma, drinks, merriment and carols were enjoyed by all, even through Mrs Donaldson looked a little underwhelmed by the whole experience! Hope you've all had a good Christmas and to a former OH captain Mr Tony Greenwood - congrats on your wedding day and to a Mrs Sullivan, fingers crossed that if you do produce a son he won't have inherited his fathers handling skills!

LONDON MEDIA vs. OHRFC 7 - 39

London Media Vs OH's

London Meedja 7-39 Old Haileyburians

I often look at these fixtures and internally bemoan the horrific misnomers that appear on the team sheets. For example how does a group called "Old Haileyburians", none of whom have ever even been to Hertfordshire, take on a bunch called "Cranleigh", based in the North of France? Surely the Law Society can’t have more blood suckers than our own dear club? And just how many of Old Emanuel are septuagenarian Hebrew deities anyway? So a huge hand must go to London Meedja for making good on their name. Not only had a night of snorting coke at the Groucho Club with some minor celebrities left them two men short at kick off, but they also found a place for Telegraph Columnist, former Spectator editor and sometime London Mayor Boris Johnson in their engine room. And he could tackle.

Whilst in some senses, 39-7 sounds like a resounding victory, in the most important sense we really met our match on Saturday. These weekly missives are often laden with adulation for our inadequate planning, late arrivals, lack of coaches and general shambolic demeanour, so a big hand to the oppo for sparing our blushes at kick-off and matching our lack of a tight head prop with two AWOL flankers. It’s nice to know we’re not the only amateurs left in Surrey 2.

Anyhew, 10 minutes in, and back up to 15-a-side, it became clear that, also like us, their casual demeanour hid a pretty decent side who were there for a game of rugby. Despite going 10-0 up pretty early on through a Hartley try and DD penalty, the first half seemed like a lot of hard work. Up front, our set piece was dominant, while our breakdown play was somewhat laboured and so it was unsurprising that the half finished 15-7 as we traded our push over scrum for their well worked try.

Other notable moments in the first half were few and far between although I did feel the pitch’s location under the Heathrow flightpath probably shed new light on the debate over a third runway. It was most acutely obvious when I heard the lineout call "43 57 29 stow away your tables and ensure your seats are in the upright position milk ball".

At half time Unters subbed himself and we blew them away in the second half.

I should probably stop there but there are a couple of other things that shouldn’t go unmentioned. Firstly was the discovery of James Down’s unique talent. It would seem that he is able to pass a ball backwards in clear view of all 30 players, but always make it appear forward to the only man that counts. Frustrating as this may be on a rugby pitch, his mastery of the space time continuum must surely have applications for good in the wider world and he should wait by the phone for the inevitable call from NASA.

It also saw a Donaldson breakaway try. Five years ago this would have passed unnoticed but it did come as a bit of a shock. Knowing his knee is mostly held together by a complex system of micro-robots and gaffer tape these days, many of us had forgotten he was able to run. Not fast like, but one foot in front of the other really well. Well done Duncan.

The rest of the half is a bit of a blur to be honest. There were some tries and some tackles. Some stuff happened. Er…. Tommo strained his boob (left, in case you were interested). Hmm… that’s it. That’s all I can remember.

And so to the all important man of the match. Hartley suggested it be shared by the trio of himself, Ed Davies and the Major, by virtue of being first back in the changing room, but for me there was one man above all others on Saturday. From his directions of "the ground is in Richmond somewhere" to taking himself off at half time because he couldn’t be arsed, it takes a special man to lead the OH ethos and still come out winning.

Unters gets the nod this week.

OHRFC vs. LAW SOCIETY 10 - 3

OH 1's v Law Society

OH 10-3 Law Society

When Sonny Curtis and the Crickets (post Buddy Holly, you understand) first penned "I fought the Law (and the law won)", they can scarcely have imagined that on the 50th anniversary of the track, and many covers later (notably The Clash’s punk anthem and Goblini’s Serbian language version), that the Law would lose.

Unless you look it up on the RFU website, records are hazy as to whether this is the first loss that the Law has suffered, but seeing as we drew with them earlier in the season, from an OH point of view, it is the first loss that counts.

We had some strong omens right from the start when not one single member of either OH team made it to the Alma for the 12-o-clock meet time, but this has always been a club strength. As the captain strolled in at 12:22 we were looking fierce.

Despite the demands of the harshest winter in a couple of decades, on arrival at Fortress Ruxley it became clear that we would benefit from glorious blue skies and a pitch you could play bowls on. Crown green, not carpet. A festival of running rugby would surely ensue? Tries a-plenty?

Half time: 3-3. So not exactly a festival then. More a small gathering of people in a field. Or a couple of kids camping in a garden.

The first half was probably more notable for a ridiculous amount of chat from both sides: "M’lud" this, and "your honour" that. At various points the judge ordered a subpoena duces tecum from the two captains with threats of 10-minute custodial sentences, but with paperwork mounting and fees building up he decided to drop the case at half time.

The second half proceeded at a brisk pace with both teams having spells camped in the other’s 22, but the defining moment proved to be an OH pre-arranged back-move that actually worked. For the purposes of this report and to illustrate how often it happens we shall call the move Halley’s Comet.

With the OH lineout purring like a cat in a cream factory and the move called, Unters tipped a ball down to the Major and the moved happened. It was something of a blur but culminated in Visa running, no, slicing, no, gliding, no, oozing, no, pussing, no, weeping through the middle of the field into clear ground. He shaped right, then left, then stumbled a bit and fell over the line. Glory.

Much as the Law tried they couldn’t pull it back and so the work was done.

Curry and mini poppadoms all round. Huzzah!

So, who should we single out for the ultimate paean of praise that is "man-o-the match"? Well Visa’s little midfield excursion made him a front runner combined with some strong kick and chase and good running all round, but for wearing shorts and flip-flops in one of the coldest January’s on record he merits little more than total revulsion.

And so the fickle finger of favour alights on an altogether greater hero.

All great teams are built on a cornerstone of granite. Think Carl Hayman, Phil Vickery, and our own dear Babyeater. To this pantheon of greats add Tiny Tim. The self confessed some time tight-head (as in some time ago), more used to the rigors of back play and the smallest man on the pitch, stepped up to the plate and barely took a step backwards. Well, some steps, but not many. He mercifully metaphorically showed us the size of his balls against a much bigger front row and still found the energy to run round the pitch wailing like a banshee. Questions over his sanity will persist as long as his hopefully lifelong association at OHs.

And so finally a joke in honour of little people:

What’s E.T. short for?

Because he’s only got little legs.

REIGATE vs. OHRFC 5 - 14

Reigate Vs OH's 2's

Reigate 5 - Old Haileyburians 2's 14 (21)

A gritty win for OH seconds saw the pundits sharpen their knives for erstwhile skipper Hulmey, as Dangerous Dave continued his winning streak to lead a depleted OH’s side to victory over Reigate. Having been cruising past teams consisting of fat, balding, 40 year old taxi drivers, OH’s were unable to play their usual champagne rugby, instead having to grind out one of their most satisfying wins of the season. Arriving at Reigate, things did not bode well when it turned out that Eamon was going to be late, depleting the squad even further. However, OH’s intensive warm up consisting of drop goal practise and a brief game of touch, allied with a Churchillian speech by Dangerous, ensured that OH’s were psyched up and ready to go. OH’s did manage to borrow two of Reigate’s substitutes who were clearly unnerved by the sheer intensity and focus of the OH pre-match rituals. It is clear that some new nicknames need to be created as, despite naming off several times beforehand, by an extraordinary coincidence everyone seemed to share the nickname “mate” whilst on the pitch, causing confusion on more than one occasion. The game itself was played in a quagmire, the likes of which has not been seen in Europe since the Somme. Despite being a man short, OH’s held their own in all areas of the pitch apart from the rolling mauls which sucked in too many players. Lineouts were a lottery and play was generally scrappy, consisting of plenty of knock ons and aimless punts down field where the ball chose to stick to the pitch rather than bounce. One area in which OH’s can be justifiably delighted were the scrums which were rock solid and did not take a backward step all afternoon. Not only were they playing with a man less in the forwards but they were able to demonstrate their exceptional versatility by packing down with a different front row nearly every time. Some bitter critics have implied that uncontested scrums may have been a factor in this but surely this is nit-picking of the worst kind. How disappointing. The deadlock was broken by Dangerous who zipped down the line on one of his trademark runs and touched down after about 20 minutes. This was expertly converted by Flyhalf Andy who had a solid game, marshalling the backline well in difficult conditions. Then followed much, much more muddy rugby before Reigate scored a well worked team try either at the end of the first half or at the beginning of the second half. (It was that memorable). OH’s continued to battle through the elements and a bout of handbags where they were cuttingly labelled “a bunch of bloody students” (these comments are to be expected with Eamon on the pitch), to score again after new boy Smidge finished off the best passage of play in the match to dive in under the posts. The game finished 14-5 to OH’s, despite Roy the referee (as he introduced himself) declaring that OH’s had run out 21-5 winners. It speaks volumes about the strength of rugby in this country that even a social club like OH’s can have such professional officials. Long may it continue. Man of the Match: Dangerous. For scoring the opening try and still managing to walk off at the end with the cleanest shirt (including Roy the referee).

OHRFC vs. CRANLEIGH 42 - 0

OH's v Cranleigh

Old Haileyburians 42-0 Cranleigh

As Jack Bauer would no doubt attest, a lot can happen in 40 minutes. You can watch an episode of 24 on Sky Plus (forwarding through the advertising messages), two episodes of the Simpsons (again minus the sponsored communications), you can slightly over-bake a lasagne, cook 53 Sainsbury’s own sticky toffee puddings in the microwave (650 Watt model) or, according to the national readership survey, read the average newspaper. A magazine, however, would take 10 minutes too long so don’t even think about it.

Welcome to my thrilling life.

But now we can add to that list "put on an absolutely devastating display of running rugby". In many ways Saturday’s offering could be described as the classic game of two halves, but with 42 unanswered OH gems in the first and no points at all from either side in the second, it was really a game of one half. This raises some difficult philosophical questions over whether something can have only one half. Surely the concept of "half" predicates the existence of another "half". I suppose if we take the abstract Platonist view then no mathematical figure or concept has any spatiotemporal properties, so you could make a case for an isolated half, but Logicism would seem to rebuff this adequately.

We could get a little bogged down here but if you want to explore the idea a little further you might as well start with the master, Isaac Newton’s Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica.

Anyhoo. So, those 40 minutes eh?! Phew! Would you ever?!

There were a number of golden moments and standout performances worth retelling – Downer’s hat-trick within the first 10 minutes being notable in a mediocre kind of way – but I think the first half will probably be remembered for only one thing, largely because that’s what I’m going to write about in the match report and there will be no other historical record of the afternoon. Let’s focus on DD’s missed penalty.

Fortunately for him, it turned out not to be crucial, but it could have been and I think it’s worth mentioning how let down we felt as a team. When the other 14 men are playing at that standard and you’ve even got two touch judges putting in the effort, it sticks in the craw when your skipper lets you down like that. Worse than that, a recently married man, with father on the touch line really let his family down – those that have given up a lot to support him. Ultimately though, he let himself down and he really needs to bottle that up and use it to drive his future misses, of which there will no doubt be many. Glad to have got that off my chest because it really defined the game for me.

Some other stuff happened in the first half.

In the second half (the one which we are unsure whether to call a half, or indeed if it existed at all. What half? What are you talking about?), we still actually played some pretty good rugby and largely camped in the Cranleigh end, so full credit to the oppo for turning it round and nilling us.

Unusually for the Surrey leagues I also thought the ref was pretty good, which no doubt means we won’t see him again, although he did come out with one of the great decision explanations of all time towards the end – "because you’re 40 points up".

So, job done and back to Rixy’s nightclub, er… I mean the newly refurbished bar. Love the blue lights Chris.

I personally went a little light on the curry as it can repeat on me somewhat after a game but I think it’s fair to say that mini-poppadoms never go down badly. With Spring nearly sprung however, I think all the OH boys are starting to look forward to the lighter menus of lasagna (40 minutes IS a bit too long – 30 minutes at 200 or 180 in a fan assisted oven tends to be best) and an achingly fresh salad.

And so, as ever, the only reason to read an OH match report, the chance to see whether your outstanding performance merited the utterly arbitrary man-of-the-match award.

There are a few options. Obviously Downer’s "four-bagga" (to use ten-pin terminology) was impressive, if a little greedy, and the whole pack showed the kind of dominance not seen since Max Moseley asked if he’d been a very naughty little boy, but, as ever, there was one individual who stood head and shoulders above all others.

Some people are born into greatness and others have it thrust upon them. In this case it was grudgingly accepted following serious injury, but DD wore the mantle of OH captain like a pro. Phrases like "I thought the shirts just appeared at the Alma" and "how many taxis do we need this week" are synonymous with Haileyburian leadership and felt as comfortable as an old pair of slippers coming from his mouth. Whether he was slicing touch kicks backwards or dropping penalties short, he showed the kind of grasp of the mantle that belied his lack of experience and picked him out as a name for the future.

Good stuff.

OHRFC vs. OLD CATERHAMIANS 21-0 Win

OH 1s V Old CaterhamiansOHRFC 1st XV vs Old Caterhamians (10th Oct 2009)

With the threat of a spot of drizzle in the air and the cry off of a number of players the game against Old Cats was hanging in the balance. However this was all just a very cunningly disguise to upset out opponents preparation. On arrival at fortress “Rux”- ley Lane, it was evident that the teams plan was working. The Old Caterhamians squad were well into their grid and bag work. OHRFC on the other hand were fully engaged in the modeling and shotgunning event that is, team kit handout, that Jonesy very kindly had laid on!!

So on to game; After the standard touch warm up which highlighted yet more injuries Oh’s rolled onto the field with 14 ½ players. At this point I think it is appropriate to thank Nic for struggling through the pain barrier for some 30mins. Who would have thought that ballet lessons as a kid would have a payoff in today’s rugby football union, but apparently running on your toes can stave off calf pain until the cavalry arrive. Note to self…. With the strong determined running rugby of OHRFC matched by the evenly determined defense of Old Cats it was two penalty kicks from, soon to be dad Harty, that proved the difference in the initial exchanges.

Finally though the try breakthrough came when Jonesy popped up on the right wing, took a cracking pop ball from Fras and touched down in the corner, much to the disgust of Harty who was worried about what a challenging kick would do for his stats!!! The words “Let’s build a f**king score” rang in the teams ears on the way back to the half way line thanks to Ferg and although most of the guys realized that this was pure plagiarism on his part, duly responded.

A fine catch and drive effort from the pack culminated with Ferg notching up yet more of a lead on Downers in the try scoring front. Half time score OHRFC- 16 Old Cats- 0 The second half was a quieter affair with only a couple of highlight-able moments.

Firstly- New recruit George chasing a kick down from 50m out to score his second of the season.
Secondly- The stunning performance of Old Cats to prevent “half time hero Downer” from adding to his tally of OH’s tries.

Overall a great performance from the team both in attack, to come away with 3 tries, but also defence by holding Old Cats to 0.
After the previous week's drubbing of Old
Cats 66-8 with only 13 men, OH 2s were expecting to have an easier ride this
week having mustered 18 men to make the trip to Thames Ditton. (Despite there
being a squad of 22 on the email on Friday, five players went missing. Vicious
rumours have been circulating that had the skipper arrived at the Alma on time,
things may have been more organised. Whilst this may have been true, any member
of the squad would be able to confirm that being delayed whilst picking up his
brand new, tailor-made rugby shorts was a small price to pay when they were put
on - they fitted like a glove). During this time, Eamon marshalled the troops
at enemy HQ, fag in mouth. When apologised to for being left in the lurch, he
simply leaned back and through the thick plumes of smoke replied, "Do I
look like a man who's worried?" No Eamon, You look like a serious athlete.
Having endured a walk to the pitch that was every bit as strenuous as the warm
up (the highlight of which was Ali James' demonstration of his "comb the
hair" technique, which left many squad members confused as to whether they
should be combing the hair on their face or scalp) the two teams faced off.
Old Oundelian's unfortunately could not provide a front row which was
particularly disappointing for the fearsome front row of Si Thommo, Toby and
Graham who had been looking forward to an afternoon of pretzel twisting the
opposition into comedy shapes. They also only had 14 men until Neil Walker
gallantly (and suspiciously keenly) volunteered to play a half for them. He
played annoyingly well for them and was probably their most dangerous player in
the first half. Traitor.

OH's started slowly despite rousing
words and a huge squeeze before kick-off (followed by an embarrassing attempt
at a follow up squeeze from Graham as the circle was breaking up). Both teams
struggled to impose themselves on the match in the first half as the ball
flowed freely between both teams. The forwards needed to get over in more
numbers and not take the ball too far into contact to ensure effective
recycling but this only happened sporadically. Kingsley ensured that OH's went
into the second half with a fortuitous 7-0 lead thanks to a breakaway try in
which he showed his opposite number that his nickname of "The Gasman"
is not entirely due to his performance at last year's curry night.

During the second half, injuries racked up for both teams and OH's big men such
as Toby, Thommo, Graham and Ben Reilly began to make serious inroads into Old
Oundelians' defensive line. The holes punched in the line began to make space
for the backs to work some magic. It was helpful to the OH's cause that the
opposition were dropping by flies at this point, although some over generosity
by the OH's skipper meant that at one stage Old Oundelian's were playing with
14 whilst OH's had 13. By this stage, the opposition's spirit had been broken
and OH's were running in tries for fun. Dean, Robbie Hanna and Kingsley were
among those on the score sheet (as were others but I can't remember who now).

The highlight of the half was a 50 yard spiral kick to touch from Toby which
left his own team-mates, the opposition and referee speechless. (Needless to
say, Toby was not left speechless. Indeed, the only time he was more vocal was
when he was heard in the bar bemoaning the food portions afterwards.)

The referee finally called time a few minutes early after a twenty minute spell
of sustained OH's dominance, much to the relief of all concerned.

Another good victory for the 2nds. Two games down and over 100 points scored. A
great start to the season - keep it up boys!

A huge thanks to Higgsy, Bradders,
Patrick and Neil for playing spells for the opposition.
It has been one of Ferg’s favourite quotes
over the past month but I think we would all agree that this was a must win
game, now that we find ourselves in a relegation dog fight.

I
would like to start with a quote from London
media “It
was a game where we had them in almost all departments with the pack clearly
fitter around the park”
…role reversal anyone?

After
a typical OH warm up we started strongly with Ferg and Deri smashing through
the smallest of gaps at the side of the breakdown. George “snake hips”
Armstrong took a leaf out of their book and sliced through the defence for the
first score. Hartley duly missed the kick.

Some
more strong play from our crash ball specialists at centre and good support
from the forwards led to 3 more tries before half time, most notably from Schoie who jumped
above Stu and Jonesy in the try scoring table.

The half finished with Hartley and Goose with
joint lead boot honours at 2 misses a piece.

In the second Half there was no reprieve as OH
played some fine champagne rugby with breaks and off loads happening at will.
On one occasion Robbie H seemed to walk through the London Media pack twice
before scoring under the posts. At this point “snake hips” had taken over the
kicking duty and was metronomic, slotting 4/4. Hartley had taken to assaulting the
morale of Media, declaring “keep it simple lads; remember they’re not very
good!”

At this point Ferg wanted us to slow the
games down and get some control, so we made a break, offload, offload, offload,
offload, knock on…just what he asked for. But due to the utter dominance of the
scrum we won the ball back and followed up with another offload, offload,
offload, offload, knock on, which prompted Ferg to pass comment …”when we win
the ball why do the back’s always F*@k it up?”

Final Score: OH – 53 London Media – 3. Job done.

LONDON MEDIA vs. OHRFC 20-49 win

2s return to winning ways

We all knew
there was something wrong on Friday
night before the game. 20 able bodied names down on the team list? OHs
have a
host of players emanating from the City and the ability of making 13.5
into 20 seems
to be something some people can’t leave at work. I say 13.5 because an
hour pre kick off Parker was still playing golf and Eamon hadn’t sobered
up yet.

The game
started well, with some good
phases until the London Media fly half after skipping a couple of
tackles went
under the posts to score. A little bit of a wake up call and a reminder
that we
had a game on our hands. The first half was a fairly even affair, though
Media
had the advantage of a swirling wind at their backs, which allowed them
to play for territory. They had a strong pack, that was kept under
control by
driving runs from, messers Unterhalter, Parker, Graham “why pass?”
Wood and Eamon; and our agile “new hooker” Chalmers, Ed and Larry
were usually first to the break down.

At half-time
we went in 15-10 up and where
we really seemed to have the edge was in the backs. We controlled the
centre
channels well, and our handling was just that bit quicker which gave our
back 3
of Kingsley, Dangerous and Patrick the ball to make real inroads, all of
whom
scored in the corners. Media came back strongly, though and only some
valiant
defence, and off the ball antics prevented them from going over.

After a series
of penalties, Fred made a
covering tackle just short of the line, and with no support held onto
the tackled
player deliberately killing the ball and preventing a probable try. The
referee
however was looking to punish somebody and after witnessing Parker’s
“tap-dancing”
and Woody indulging in some of his own “enforcing” Fred made his first
trip to the sin bin. Unfortunately for Fred, his mother arrived as he
was been
carded, and was informed by another spectator that he must be a very
dirty
player, apparently the referee wasn’t too bothered about the stamping,
so
he must have done something really bad! Ten minutes of explaining later
Fred was
back on the pitch and the OHs were 3 points better off!

After what had
been a really tense match
and with 15 men back on the pitch, the backs started to open up.
Chalmers was
held up over the line after being almost split in half by two big men. And
then in the last 15 minutes the OHs stared to move the ball wider and
ran in a
series of great tries to win 49-20. A very solid performance against a
team
that was rather better than the scoreline suggests.
